There are several arrangements of this carol, but for me John Rutter's is by far the best, the boys of the choir absolutely nail it and the organist's accompaniment is just superb. Have listened to it many times, and not just at Christmas.!!

I prefer a male voice choir for this anthem. The pure tone of boy sopranos is perfect and lacks the sometimes off key burring of mature female sopranos.

The most depressing hymn ever written. I was sent to boarding school in England and after spending a weekend with my parents at home, we were forced to sing this by our sexual deviant of a school master. The lyrics made me so depressed.

What a pity the Catholic services are often poor in comparison to the glory of the hymns in the Anglican tradition. I simply adore this hymn. “Here might I stay and sing No story do divine… This is my friend, In whose sweet praise I all my days could gladly spend”. Amen.

When you hear this hymn, it gives you hope in this hostile world

First heard this hymn in the September of 2006 while in JS1 at St. Andrew's Catholic Secondary school Adikpo, at the country side of Benue State Nigeria. From that day even as a 9 year old boy, this hymn and of course, then entire hymanl culture has become a profund aspect of my life and has led me more to Christ than ever.
